International Stuttering Awareness Day

This year, the theme for International Stuttering Awareness Day (ISAD, October 22, 2009) is Stuttering: More Than a Tangled Tongue. ISAD is designed to raise awareness about the challenges that people who stutter experience. The occasion is a joint endeavor by persons who stutter and their families and professionals (educators, researchers, and clinicians) interested in stuttering. ISAD provides a framework for building a more humane, just, and compassionate world for millions of people who stutter.

ISAD is co-sponsored and recognized by major international stuttering organizations, such as the International Stuttering Association, the International Fluency Association, the European League of Stuttering Associations, and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Special Interest Division on Fluency and Fluency Disorders, as well as national organizations (for a list, go to www.isastutter.org).

This year's events include the twelfth annual online conference October 1-22, hosted by Judith Kuster, Minnesota State University, Mankato, on The Stuttering Home Page (www.stutteringhomepage.com). The online conference features several papers written by well-known professionals and consumers (people who stutter/clutter) from around the world. Participants can read papers and interact with the presenters on easy-to-use threaded discussions attached to each paper, during the 3 weeks the conference is "live." The ISAD online conference is freely available or can be taken for Continuing Education (1.5/15 hours) or one university credit (either graduate or undergraduate). Instructions and requirements for CEU or credit are online at http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/isadarchive/requirements.html

Papers remain available online after the conference has ended. All past conferences are archived and available at http://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/isadarchive/onlineconference.html Other ISAD activities in the past have included people who stutter and professionals hosting an open house, advocating for a proclamation marking ISAD October 22 or students talking in their class about stuttering.
